There are 35 muscles controlling movement in the hands and fingers. Some muscles work at birth and others kick in much later in a child’s life. That’s why asking a baby to learn certain fine motor tasks is impossible. They may find a way but will be substituting the wrong muscles to succeed.
The trick is figuring out how to exercise all the hand muscles at the right time with the right activity. The key is finding age appropriate, fun activities. When all the hand muscles are strong, a child develops fine motor dexterity with ease.
