Drawing is a complex process that requires
- Strength and dexterity of the hands
- Sense of direction (up, down, right and left)
- The idea (or image) of what is to be drawn.
Initially the toddler and young preschooler will hold chunky markers and crayons in a fisted hand and move the arm randomly and wildly around in circular and/or haphazard strokes. Some will gleefully report that they have just drawn a beloved family member. Some, with a critical eye, note that the image drawn does not exactly match the image in their heads and thus, become discouraged and turn away from drawing altogether.
Finding the right mix of experimentation and developmental readiness is key to the child’s enjoyment and ultimate confidence when approaching the two dimensional world of drawing and writing.
